Falkland Islands wool goes by rail
EWS Network has provided a rail freight solution to assist in the transportation of wool sheared from the Falkland Islands' sheep population.
Twice a year, the Falkland Islands exports wool sheared from its 60,000 sheep population. EWS Network transported the wool by rail in the UK for the last two years and has again won the contract to move the containers packed with wool this year.
The wool arrived into the Port of Southampton this month for onward transportation on EWS Network intermodal trains to the Wakefield Rail Freight Terminal.
Corinne Lamoureux, EWS Network Field Sales Manager, said: "This operation takes place twice a year and is a major part of the Falkland Islands export economy. Historically, the wool has been transported by road once it arrives into the UK. This is the third time the railway has transported the wool and EWS Network is delighted to have provided yet again a workable and cost effective solution for this unusual traffic."
