Channel Tunnel rail freight revitalised by new freight arrangements

EWS International, the operator of freight trains through the Channel Tunnel, today welcomes the new rail freight charging scheme, published in Eurotunnel's Network Statement.

This joint initiative with Eurotunnel, which EWS International has been instrumental in developing, will assist in addressing the dramatic decline of Channel Tunnel rail freight over the last twelve months.

David Kerr, EWS Commercial Director, said: "The new framework for rail freight charging will provide greater clarity on costs and stimulate the movement of intermodal traffic on longer trains, thereby playing a major part in the reduction of transport's carbon footprint. The introduction of Open Access arrangements will provide EWS International and Euro Cargo Rail with the opportunity to deliver faster transit times and increased service reliability, competing with alternative modes of transport."

EWS International and Euro Cargo Rail are working on the expansion of services for customers in 2008 and will provide a further update in due course.
